5 AMBERT, Joachim. Esquisses historiques des différents corps qui composent l’Armée Française. Nouvelle Édition. Bruxelles, Librairie militaire de J. -B. Petit, (1839).
Crown quarto. Pp. 602. Plus 16 exquisitely hand-coloured lithograph plates by Charles Aubry, each within decorative hand-tinted frame, embodying numerous military motifs. Armorial device to title-page. Half-title, dedication leaf. Footnotes, index. Set in double columns. Hardcover, contemporary half ebony calf, spine gilt, later-covered boards; some imperfections to binding, slightly cracked inner-hinges. In a very good condition (spotting, foxing). Overall a very desirable copy.
- - New edition. An earlier edition was published in around 1835 but contained only 13 plates. This edition, embellished with extra plates, also contains the 235-page “Articles publiés dans divers journaux militaires depuis 1836.” This addition is bound in its rightful place after the “Adieu” which concludes the first part of the book, and paginated consecutively. A later edition, published in 1840, titled “Esquisses historiques, psychologiques et critiques de l’Armée Française” often concluded with the “Adieu”. Several other editions appeared with the prints uncoloured. The fine technique of colouration here is exceptional. The charming plates here are coloured by contemporary hand with rich, dense dyes, more opaque than transparent, and are delicately heightened with fine touches of shellac, adding richness and elegance to the darker tones. Joachim Marie Jean Jacques Alexandre Jules Ambert (1804-1890), son of a General, became a soldier himself, serving from 1824 until 1870, rising to become a Dragoon officer, later a General of the Cavalry. Exceedingly scarce edition; see both Colas and Lipperheide. Not a single copy is listed in OCLC.

17 BUCQUOY, Eugène Louis. Les uniformes du Premier [1er] Empire. Collection Cartes Postales Documentaires de E.-L. Bucquoy. [COLLECTION OF 1,800 ORIGINAL HAND-COLOURED CARDS]. Nancy, Strasbourg, 1907-52.
Collection of ca. 1,800 (of 1830) unique original hand-coloured cards in 221 series (of 226). Contains the series 1-144, 146-157, 162-226. The cards are printed in collotype and were professionally hand-coloured according to the original artworks before being issued. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. The entire collection is meticulously arranged according to subject in 8 ring albums, each leaf protected with a tissue guard. A most fantastic set in absolutely superb condition.
- - First and only edition. With an ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR by Bucquoy, signed by himself, dated 1922. Measuring ca. 20 x 25 cm, on thick handmade paper, preserved in superb condition. This attractive original was later reproduced as card 134/4: Le Colonel Brincard. - - ADDED: A very rare collection of over 100 original explanatory leaflets, booklets, and books by Bucquoy, some of which are full-length and illustrated, all belong to the present work. These materials were especially issued to accompany the cards and to provide extensive scholarly information on the study of uniforms. - - ALSO ADDED: A rare collection of over 150 original printed envelopes including the first envelope, number 1. Each envelope acts as a title-page to the corresponding series of cards. It is titled, captioned, dated, priced, numbered according to series, and bears the names of the artists who worked on this particular series. - - Eugene Louis Bucquoy (1879-1958) is considered the founding father of French uniform research. His “Bréviaire du Collectionneur d’uniformes renseignements -Conseils -Souvenirs” (1953) became the standard work on research and collection. Bucquoy was an officer of the Gendarmerie Nationale. In 1920 he founded the Société d’Étude des Uniformes de France of which he consequently became President. For his “Les uniformes du 1er Empire”, by far the largest and most complete work ever compiled exclusively on the French army during the First Empire, he invited the foremost military artists at the time. Benigni, Huen, Rousselot, Knötel, Boisselier, Hilpert, JOB, Rouffet, Toussaint are among the best known. He continued to work on the project until his death. - - PROVENANCE: The present collection comes from the bequest of the late Dr. Frans Gerard de Wilde (1903-1999). A pharmacist by profession, a Captain in the Dutch Artillery, a recipient of the Bronze Cross for bravery in battle, he was the supreme expert on Dutch military uniforms, a distinguished collector, and a noted artist. In his youth he was befriended with Hoynck van Papendrecht, the great Dutch painter of military scenes and uniforms. He later became acquainted with the major experts on military uniforms in Europe, in particular with Commandant Bucquoy, with whom he corresponded regularly. He was a major force behind the initiation of the Legermuseum in Delft, and a member of its Board until his death. In 1992, when he decide to part from his extensive collection, a major auction sale was organized, attracting collectors from all over the world and considerable media attention. Though the main reason for his decision to sell his collection was his planned move to a smaller residence, it is remarkable that he was not willing to part from his collection of the Bucquoy’s cards and this was not offered on the sale. He kept this large 8-volume set with him until his death. Extremely rare. Complete sets of this work are practically non-existent. Not in OCLC, KVK, British Library, Library of Congress, nor in any institutional library worldwide. The National Library of France is the only library to hold a fragment of this work - having in their collection only 22 series out of 226.

- - First and only edition. A marvellous production. Printed in a limited edition by Imprimerie Crémieu, N. Fortin et ses fils, of Paris. Some bibliographical references suggest the book was actually published in 1936. Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève quotes 11 May 1936 as the actual publishing date. The copy in the New York Public Library has the imprint date changed in manuscript to 1936. The exquisite colour plates were produced by a complicated and delicate process, now obsolete, which was invented in the early 1850’s by Firmin Gillot. Known as Gillotage, the process turned a lithographic drawing into a relief plate. Employing both planographic and relief methods, the process remained purely manual, involving no photography. The lithograph was transferred to zinc and then etched, in an extremely laborious process, to make a metal relief block from which the final print was made. The colour was added by using multiple blocks, coloured by mechanical tints, to produce the rich, dense, chromatic plates. Eugène Louis Bucquoy (1879-1958); Maurice Toussaint (1882-1974); Augustin Mariaux (1864-1944); Philippe Pétain (1856-1951). Rare. KVK lists British Library and National Library of France only. OCLC 15557256 lists 4 copies only, Brown University, Library of Congress, New York Public Library, and UCLA. Not in French Union Catalog. Provenance: The Maître Pierre Masse’s copy. With the Publisher’s handwritten dedication: “Hommage de l’Editeur a Maître Pierre Masse, en souvenir de la précieuse bienveillance”. Maître Pierre Masse (1879-1942), Ordre de la Nation. Elected deputy of Hérault in 1914. Became Captain of Infantry during the First World War. Later became a lawyer, and was appointed Under-Secretary for Pensions and Military Justice. In 1940, Masse and his brother Roger, a Colonel in the French army, both Jews, were stripped of their ranks by the Nazis. In 1942 they were deported to Drancy, from which they were sent to Auschwitz. Both did not survive.

- - First edition. Copy number 303 from a limited edition of 600 copies printed on “vélin glacé”. The numerous line drawn illustrations are extremely detailed and serve as a finely produced catalogue of military dress and accoutrements. The exquisite colour plates were printed by the printers firm of Paul Lemaire of Paris. Made by various draughtsmen after the works of Chelminski, Grammont, Dupray, Orange, and Vallet, they are the result of several techniques and processes. Many were produced by a complicated and delicate process, now obsolete, which was invented in the early 1850’s by Firmin Gillot. Noteworthily, many of Daumier’s lithographic plates were treated in this way before their publication. Other plates here are the result of using compound metal line blocks. The colour was added by using multiple blocks, coloured by mechanical tints, to produce the rich, dense, chromatic plates. Complementing these processes are several chromolithographic plates, printed by the lithographer firm of H. Corbel. Noteworthy is the addition of colours applied by hand to many of the plates, often as a finishing touch but occasionally as the main colouring medium. Rare. OCLC 1858033 locates copies in Library of Congress; National Art Library Victoria & Albert Museum; and San Francisco Public Library. OCLC 53071290 adds copies in Brown University and in University of North Carolina, the latest is copy no. 14, with the bookplate of the original owner, M. Ney, Prince de la Moskowa. KVK locates only Library Network of Western Switzerland; French Union Catalog; and British Library. Not in National Library of France. Copies in Union Catalog North Rhine-Westphalia and National Library of France are modern facsimile reprints. Colas 1030. Hardcover, privately bound together in contemporary green cloth, with gilt title label pasted onto spine. In a general very good condition. State of preservation varies: some volumes are in about fine condition, others have faults which vary from occasional blemish to edge chipping due to dry-out fragile paper (as often is the case with Ruhl’s plates), marginal repairs (with clear adhesive tape), short splits and tears, etc. Text blocks are in a general fine condition. The plates, originally published in leporello in almost all seven books, are bound-in; the two 4-panel leporellos are repaired edge to edge. Old institutional stamp to each volume.
- - First edition, unless otherwise stated. Exceptional collection of original Moritz Ruhl chromolithograph plates of military uniforms and insignia. While occasionally an individual title may be available, the combination of these books, representing different armies in different periods, makes this set a unique collectible. Some of the titles here are exceedingly scarce; “Das Norwegische Heer / Den Norske Haer” is of particular scarcity.

124 TIRON, l’Abbé [René]. Compiled by Auguste Wahlen. Histoire et Costumes des Ordres Religieux, Civils et Militaires. Deuxième édition, considérablement augmentée. Dédiée a Son Eminence Le Cardinal Lambruschini. [THREE BOOKS IN TWO VOLUMES]. Bruxelles, Librairie Historique-Artistique, 1845.
Three books in two volumes. Royal octavo. Pp. iv, 299, (4) list of plates, errata; 220 inc. list of plates; 68, (4) list of plates, errata. Plus 118 finely hand-coloured costume plates (only 117 are called-for), protected with tissue guards; dampmark on tissue guards slightly offset onto few plates. With a finely engraved frontispiece portrait of Pope Gregory XVI, set within decorative border, drawn and engraved by Paul Chenay, printed on fine China paper, laid-down. Auguste Wahlen’s imprimatur. Illustrated title-pages; half-titles; divisional titles; occasionally foxed or blemished in places. Hardcover, Volume I bound in contemporary half calf and marbled boards (spine very worn); Volume II bound in quarter cloth and marbled boards. In overall very good condition (old institutional stamps and markings). Desirable set with all plates presently protected with sheets of acid-free, pH-balanced Renaissance archival paper.
- - New, considerably enlarged edition, published in the same year as the first. Compiled by Auguste Wahlen, who has signed his authorship with “Publié par Auguste Wahlen” in the imprimatur. Wahlen is the author of the famous work “Moeurs, usages et Costumes de tous les peuples du monde”, published also by the Bruxelles’ Librairie historique-artistique (1843). His real name was Jean François Nicolas Loumyer. Not only a prolific author, he was also an active publisher in Brussels and published several, varied titles. His exact role in publishing “Histoire et Costumes” is only to be guessed. However, “date in luce”, i.e. “compiled by”, “edited by”, is probably the most correct. The set of 118 exquisite plates in this book is remarkable. The plates here are coloured by contemporary hand with rich, dense dyes, more opaque than transparent, and are delicately heightened with fine touches of egg-white, adding richness and elegance to the darker tones. Cracked with age, this natural varnish gives many plates the depth and charm of an old Renaissance painting. Colas (2882), Lipperheide (1881). KVK loctaes copies in Union Catalogues Italy, Britain (2), Canada, France, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Southwest Germany only. OCLC 5318902 adds 5 copies worldwide.
